Are the punisher comics good?
Depends on which series you mean. The latest series is a MAX comic, the imprint of Marvel that can have all the gore, nudity and maughty language that the Comics Code usually forbids. It is written by Garth Ennis. Being a bloodthirsty girlie, I rather enojoy it, but many people find it extreme and/or offensive.
Before MAX, the Punisher was in a Marvel Knights series, also written by Ennis, but with less gore, no nudity and far more dark humor than is used in the current series. The Knights series is my personal favorite. Anotehr great miniseries by Ennis is Born, the story of the 'birth' in the Punisher during Frank Castle's third tour of duty in Vietnam.
While The Punisher has always been a dark antihero, the original run (that began in the 70's) features a very slightly gentler Punisher who often teamed up with superheroes to help them out (and who often didn't kill his targets in deference to the wishes of Spider-man or whoever he was working with). He also had a sidekick at that point, who he loses in the Knights series. In the 80's he participated in the war on drugs.
So really it depends on which Punisher you want to see. Good luck!
