Whats the difference between Marvel 80`s Transformer comics that have an M where the issue number is?
I am currently in the process of completing my UK and US versions of the 80`s G1 transformers comics using Ebay and other sites.
In the case of the US versions. I have purchased some comics already and have a few duplicates. I have just noticed something that is different between some issues.
In the top left hand corner of the comics, where the MARVEL name is and price etc. The white box, where the issue number is, is in the shape of an M and on others it is just a square white box. Issues with the same number have the M and the other has a square box.
I am wondering if anyone knows what this difference is? Does it change the value of any of them? As i do want to re-sell the duplicates but do not want to get rid of ones that are more valuable than others.
The "M" issues indicate that the comics are Direct Editions while the plain white box are Newsstand Editions. Direct Editions are typically sold at comic shops and subscription services while Newsstand Editions are sold in retail stores, drug stores, newsstands, etc.
There is no difference in value between the two editions but some collectors may prefer one or the other. Usually Direct Editions would be preferred since they theoretically are handled more carefully from printing up until they are sold. A Direct Edition would most likely be handled by someone that also collects or enjoys comics so they would know how to handle them when putting them on shelves for sale. A newsstand edition is more likely to be placed on the shelf by someone that doesn't know anything about comics so they wouldn't take care to make sure that they don't bend them and what not.
Direct Editions first came out around the 1970s after the comic market at newsstands started to drop drastically compared to comic shops/specialty stores, so the publishers began to allow retailers to buy directly from them instead of their newsstand distribution companies. The difference between the two types affects the retailers more. Direct Editions cannot be returned by the retailers if they are unable to sell all of their inventory while the Newsstand Editions can. And Direct Editions can also be purchased by retailers at a bigger discount since the distributors do not have to worry about giving them credit for returned items.
Today's comics are easier to identify because the box where they barcode is will either say "Direct Edition" or it won't say anything for newsstand editions. Another earlier way that Marvel used to distinguish between the two was whether the issue number was inside of a diamond (Direct Edition) or a plain white box. Also in the late 80's to early 90's, Direct Editions had a picture of a Superhero in the barcode area instead of a barcode while Newsstand Editions had just a barcode.
