Death at a high school, how to announce it?
How would you go about announcing that a student a high school has died earlier that morning. None of the students know the student died earlier that day. Would you announce it over the PA system when all the students were in class or would it be better to go to each classroom individually as the principal and inform the students or should the principal inform the teachers and ask them to inform the students. What do you think would be a good idea? Also is there a website or information regarding crisis management plans for high schools?
The principal AND the school grief/guidance counselor should go to each classroom individually to tell the students. This should be done as early as possible to insure that the students hear from the principal and not through gossip in the hallway. The counselor should make a point of saying her door is open to any student who feels he or she needs to talk and also hold at least one afterschool grieving group during this first week to allow students to come and grieve and speak out loud or just listen as a group. A school memorial should also be planned to honor the life of the student, this should happen after the funeral so as not to distract the family from the funeral services. But this should occur fairly soon after so to provide closure and fellowship for the students and staff who may not feel able to attend the funeral itself. This should also be added to the soonest school paper. Give the students an opportunity to involve as much as possible in the school memorial and share an essay or piece of artwork by the deceased. Allow any teacher or student to share a brief memory or story about the student as well. This is a terrible and difficult time. Prayers be with your school.
