Alternative American Cinema Holidays
New York may well be the city of film, even when the film is not made in the city it seems producers go out of their way to make it look like New York. It is a city that everyone knows and understands the universal city of story-telling.
Then Paris is familiar all the world over due to the number of films providing the city as its back drop.
And then there is San Francisco shot so famously in Hitchcock's Vertigo.
And any movie set around movie making is made in LA. The city which is all too frequently dressed up as New York, or Paris, or even Rome, in those grand studios that through the magic of set design, contain the whole world.
This is the world of main stream cinema, the big hitting pictures designed to bring in big crowds, showing them familiar setting that they know very well through the magic of cinema. Yet with a wider access to technology there has been an alternate side of America portrayed in the latter decades of the 20th century, films aiming to tell a different story from guy meets girl, and saves the world.
Something closer to a common experience that is left unportrayed in cinema. These offer a different taste of America and through it you get to see a whole different side to explore and travel through.
Here is a guide to some of the best indie picture holiday locations in the United States of America.
Portland, Oregon
Portland, Oregon is Gus Van Sant country, in these streets we see a stoned Matt Dillon walking with a sagely but degenerate old William Burroughs who is telling him Heroin is a vegetable.
The town is undeniably hip; mostly it is removed from the dirt and grime that is mostly shown throughout that particular movie. It is a town of coffee shops and book stores and cultural events happening all year over. Yet it is a town that Van Sant still likes to return to to tell his tales of Suburban isolation. We saw this recently with his skating movie Paranoid Park.
The film was also featured in last year's acclaimed Indy picture Wendy and Lucy, which starred Michelle Williams as a rather lost young girl trying to find her way in life, with only her dog for company. As the dog gets lost it turns to a tale about the fragility of hope and transforms in to one of the saddest pictures in recent years.
Portland is a very beautiful town full of charm and character, furthermore the Oregon Rentals can offer the height of urbane living
Austin, Texas
Austin cam to screen in a big small way with Richard Linklater's slacker and he has been paying tribute to his hometown ever since.
Now Austin has the reputation as a great alternative spot, a great location for indie culture. Throughout his career the director has returned to the town, portraying days gone by in the cult classic Dazed and Confused.
More recently the film was portrayed in Andrew Bujalski's Beeswax.
