Benedict Arnold: Had an agreement with the Continental Congress that they would pay him to take the cannon at Fort Ticonderoga. He and his men captured the fort but was unaware until that moment that Ethan Allen and his "Green Mountain Boys" had essentially the same agreement. Allen was given both the credit and money for having captured the fort and its cannon. Arnold went on to fight valiantly for the Americans in Montreal, Quebec and Saratoga (also known as Freeman's Farm). In all three battles he'd been severely wounded in the same leg and walked with a horrific limp. At Saratoga, he made his boss Horatio Gates look bad, when Gates coward behind a stone fence, Arnold mounted a horse and lead the charge. Arnold as a general, later befriended General Washington and talked him into allowing him command of the fort at West Point. Still angry over the slight of money and credit from Ticonderoga, Arnold allowed the men to relax at full leisure, and the fort to fall into severe disrepair. He then gave to the English, the plans to the fort as well as Washington's itinerary for a planned inspection of the fort and men. It all fell apart when his go between was captured and Washington showed up for breakfast instead of the planned lunch. Arnold panicked and ran for a waiting boat that took him out to a British man o' war. His wife and child caught up to him later. He fought equally as valiantly for the English as he had for the Americans. He and his family moved to London and found themselves unwelcome and untrusted. He went on to fight also in France, still unable to earn the trust and respect of the English, he died lonely and poor.
Washington was a land speculator whose father left him, his brother and sisters "some" land. Washington was able to amass some 220,000 acres and a "small" fortune. He was intent on making a name for himself and becoming a "gentleman of Virginia." He was noted for making small gambles with his land in order to amass both it and his fortune. As was custom of the time, he then purchased a commision in the military. As a young, Lt.Col., he was assigned the task (by the Governor of Virginia) to take a group of men over the Appalachian Mountains into the Ohio River Valley and was to establish a settlement along the Mississippi River. The ORV was owned by the French and Native Indians. Washington and his men came upon a French owned fort and attacked it, sparking what was to become a very expensive, two continent war known as The French and Indian/Seven Year's War. Washington was brash and was responsible for a number of his men's deaths. Still, he took responsibility and he learned. When the colonists decided to break from England, Washington accepted the post as Commanding General of the Continental Army. He had enough money that he personally paid for both the uniforms and weapons of his men. At war's end, Washington returned to his homestead and attempted to leave public life. When called upon by his country, he accepted the post as President. He was neither Democrat-republican nor a Federalist. He was more of an isolationist. The country was out of money and could not even afford to remove the last of the English Army which intentionally and antagonistically chose to remain in North America. Washington made clear that America's interests should remain at home in America. Without the protection of the English Navy, American citizens traveling abroad were subject to piracy on the high seas. Often times kid napped and held for ransom, Washington preferred to pay the ransom rather than risk military involvement. The rest of the world had turned their backs on the fledgling country (including France who'd helped fund the Revolution) -- they were all monarchies, and no one would do business with The United States. Washington's presidency was governed by the Articles of Confederation and as such, he had very few powers -- states had greater power than did the federal government. Washington served as President from 1789-1797 and he died two years later in 1799.
