Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God and first born Son of God, Difference?
In john 1:18 says Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God and in colosians 1:15 says He is the image of invisible God, and the first born of all creation. what is the difference between the only begotten and the first born? (general question, and particular to Jehovah witness and to those who do not believe Christs humanity)
Not a JW here. I DO believe in Christ's humanity, and so do the JWs. However if, like the JWs and the Mormons you limit your thinking about the terms 'Son of God' and 'only-begotten' to the way humans beget children, you will never - in a million years - be able to go beyond that to grasp the spiritual dimension of such phrases in the Bible. What Jesus did was to keep applying the term 'Son of Man' to himself far, far more than ever He accepted / used the appellation 'Son of God'. He let God state that from heaven, and His apostles confess that. Now, after Jesus was resurrected and His followers saw Him ascend bodily back into heaven, they began to put two and two together. They realised He was far more than just human! Doubting Thomas had confessed Him to be his Lord and his God and the risen Christ accepted that, adding how blessed believers would be to make the same confession even though they'd never seen Him.
The Greek scriptures show God commanding all the angels to worship Christ, and Jesus sharing the same throne in heaven as the Father, and all heaven's throngs worshipping both of them simultaneously. And it is the Greek language that shows the meaning of the terms 'Son of God' and 'only-begotten'; they have nothing to do with Christ ever having been created at some point in time, because Christ is the creator (John 1:1-3). There are no more two creators than there are two Gods! Either Jesus is the same God who created us, or He is a demi-god, which would make Him a false god, because the Bible is emphatic that there is only one true God - the creator.
This is why the Trinity doctrine took so long to be thrashed out - we are dealing with a phenomenal concept that goes beyond our finite limitations to understand; there is One Being who is God, who subsits of three uncreated, co-equal persons. Unfortunately for us, the Latin word for persons that was used in formulating the Trinity doctrine did not mean exactly what we take it to mean today, and that causes confusion. Not the fault of the Trinity doctrine, though. We are dealing with the limitation of words, and that's the problem.
In conclusion, if Jesus' sonship is taken to be physical, literal procreation of some sort, then it would be blasphemy to then go on to call Jesus God. No creature can be equal to God! But if Jesus was eternally the 'Son' of God in a relational sense, then He has to be the uncreated Creator who agreed to be sent by the Father to add human nature to His divine nature in order to save us, the Holy Spirit being equally involved in creation and in the incarnation.
