Four Comic Lot
What Comic books should we start reading?
Me and my cousin love Superheroes and we know a lot about them but we never really read the comics, we just got all the info from websites.
We want to start to read them but don't really know where to start.
We really like X-Men and Fantastic Four but we don't want to start at the VERY beinging because we know all the stuff.
We kinda wanted to start with something like the Dark Phoenix Saga, House of M, of Thor but don't know.
We just need a push in the right direction and then we can go on eBay and get some series.

I recommend picking up trade paperbacks, which are collected editions so you can get complete comic stories all in one volume. They're cheaper and very easy to find. Any comic book store will keep a good selection of them in stock, you can find them at any Borders or Barnes and Noble, and from various places online. I get most of mine from Amazon.com since they're almost all at a discount. Most importantly, with trades you don't have to mess around with bidding on sometimes very expensive issues on eBay or in comic stores.
For instance, the Dark Phoenix Saga is from almost 30 years ago, and the original X-Men issues that happened in would cost you at least $100 (more if the issues are in good shape). Whereas, you can read the whole thing together in this one volume for only $17

Another good X-Men story to start with is Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men #1 It's the real X-Men, not some alternate universe like Ultimates, but it's written with first time readers in mind. It's also just a kick ass comic. 6 issues in one volume for $10. Buying these individually would have cost you $20 or more.

Although you might want to read House of M after Avengers Disassembled and New Avengers volume 1, since it deals with stuff that happened in those.

Thor is a cool character, but can be a bit confusing at times. His Disassembled story arc (Ragnarok) was pretty badass

After Ragnarok, Thor went away for a couple of years, and then came back with this book here. This is the better starting point for new readers, but it springs out of a lot of stuff from Ragnarok.

For a completely stand alone, fun Thor story, I recommend Blood Oath (Amazon is out of stock, but Amazon sellers have new copies for as cheap as $4.20)

At some point after House of M but before Thor vol 1 you'll probably want to read Civil War, which was a pretty major event in the Marvel Universe featuring all the major characters
