Buddhists - What are the different schools in Buddhism? i.e. Pure land, secret, etc? Why sects?
Since this a buddha question, i hope mr. "greg L" will answer as well. i appreciate how he answers in good detail and logic and shows long term study and understanding in the material. If u see this "greg L", will you plase answer this too?
Can "PANG" answer too? top contributor and answers a lot. but most your answers are general or cited answers. can you share your insight on this question but also explain more in detail instead? seems like you have a lot of sources you can cite from, so perhaps you have an answer for this too. but can you also be more detailed?
Over 2,500 years, Buddhism has diversified into many different traditions. There are historical and cultural reasons for this, but this diversity also arises directly from Buddha's original teaching.
The Buddha taught different techniques to different people at different times. Why? Because each human being has a unique capacity to awaken, based on karmic conditions.
Some people become enlightened on hearing one phrase of Buddhist teaching. Others require decades of effort. Some will not awaken in this life. The Buddha understood this and so, like any good doctor, he offered appropriate "medicine" to each type of person.
As a result of Buddha's wisdom about human beings, some Buddhist schools focus on meditation practice, while others focus on sutra study, chanting, good works, or other kinds of practice activities. Each approach has great value!
And the practice requirements for an individual Buddhist practitioner may also change over time.
When I was younger, I undertook many long meditation retreats. Later, my practice evolved to include much more chanting and I have led extended chanting retreats. Lately, my practice includes considerable sutra study -- texts that were once incomprehensible now have a deep resonance. All these approaches have helped me grow up as a human being. One is not better than another -- they're just different. Different medicines for different diseases.
After Buddha's death, his teachings were recorded by those who remembered his words. These teaching were elaborated upon by various Buddhist councils and teachers for several hundred years.
Out of all this effort, the various traditions of Buddhism appeared. Each tradition reflects aspects of Buddha's original teaching, but also reflects the cultural background and dynamics of various Buddhist cultures.
Vajrayana (Tibetan) Buddhism, for example, carries forward elements of the Yogācāra tradition on Indian Buddhism, but also includes many aspects of the indigenous Bon spiritual tradition of Tibet.
Similarly, the Zen Buddhist tradition derives from both the Indian Yogācāra and Madhyamaka philosophies, as well as the Prajñāpāramitā literature brought by monks into China. But Zen also includes important elements of the native Chinese Taoist tradition. (In fact, when Buddhism first appeared in China, the Chinese referred to it as "Indian Taoism.")
The Theravada tradition (which is actually several traditions) is generally based on the earliest Buddhist texts but also reflects to some degree certain cultural tendencies towards logical analysis and philosophy. (Most Westerners are only familiar with the meditational aspects of Theravadin Buddhism.)
Within the three major Buddhist traditions active today (many have come and gone over 2,500 years) -- Theravada, Vajrayana, Mahayana -- there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of individual sects and schools. Personally, I think this is wonderful!
We humans continue to invent new ways to harm ourselves and the world around us. As a result, Buddhism continues to evolve. New medicines for new diseases.
