Lady Pendragon
Do you know where i can find the full version of the Arthur Pendragon story?
And i mean the fantasy one, with the Lady of the Lake and Excaliber, not the historically accurate one. I've been trawling through pages and pages on google but none of them just have the story (or is it stories, there seem to be a few) But does anyone know of a good website where i can find it? With all the characters like his father and step brother as well.
There is no one, single story about Arthur, rather there are a large number of contradictory tales.
Note that Arthur is NEVER known as “Arthur Pendragon” in the medieval tales. “Pendragon” is a non-hereditary surname applied only to Arthur’s father Uther Pendragon. So far as I know, the first writer to apply the title of “Pendragon” to Arthur was the Victorian poet Arthur Lord Tennyson in his “Idylls of the King”. This was probably based on theories from some Victorian antiquary that “Pendragon” was a general title.
Also, almost nothing is known of the supposed “historical” Arthur, not even if he really existed at the time in which later tales place him. There is no “historically accurate” account.
Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” written in the 15th century, provides a reasonably complete account of the tale as told in various earlier French prose romances. See http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/mart/index.htm .
The voluminous extended Lancelot cycle was the core of most of the medieval prose French tales which mostly accepted its continuity, although not completely. It can be found here: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Sommer%20vulgate , named by its editor as the “Vulgate Version of the Arthurian romances”. It is summarized in English at http://www.timelessmyths.com/arthurian/vulgate.html . But this is only one version.
For example, in this version Lancelot is Guenevere’s lover and the grail is achieved by Galahad, Lancelot's son, aided by Perceval and Lancelot’s cousin Bohort (Bors). But in Ulrich von Zatzikhoven’s “Lanzelet”, Lancelot is not a lover of Guenevere, marries four different women, one after the other, and eventually settles down with the third and raises a large family. The grail, in early accounts, is usually achieved by Perceval alone, and in one account by Gawain. Galahad is unknown.
