Seperation Anxiety?!?
Our new dog (male, 6 months, border collie cross), has huge issues every time we leave. We are kennel training him, and he barks, whines and thrashes around in his kennel and makes a ton of noise! He goes in his kennel every single night while we sleep and he never whines once, but the second he hears us leaving the home he gets very upset. We leave in a duplex and the lady who lives downstairs is getting very very upset, and we need this behaviour to stop. We have tried putting in blankets and treats and toys and rawhide bones for him to chew and keep busy, those didnt work. We also tried putting our clothing in with him so he would smell us at all times, that did not work. Please help us, we are at our wits end!
Been there done that! Is your dog shaking with excitement when you return too? My dog was absolutely crazy about my leaving. Here's what I did:
1. I started crating her all the time. When I was home, her crate was in the livingroom so she could see the comings and goings of the family without being able to follow us everywhere. She could see us going here and there, to the bathroom, outside to get the mail, but she was in her crate so she could not follow us. If we could leave the room and come back and not have her cry or whine, we would give her a liver treat. Also, anytime we asked her to go into the crate, we gave her a liver treat. The only time she got that treat was when she was in the crate.
2. We took her out of the crate to potty, but we made sure she had a leash on so we could control her every move. Our only interaction with the dog was outside and on a lead. We could take her out as frequently as we desired, but if she was in the house, she was crated in the same room we were in.
3. We crated her every night. Allowing the dog to sleep with you increases it's insecurity. They must learn to spend time on their own.
It took about a week for the dog to stop complaining. DO NOT GIVE IN TO THE WHINING!! Dogs are wonderful manipulators. The dog needs to get past the ghosts in her head.
I think leaving her crated in the main room and having her watch us go from room to room and come back again really helped her to realize... oh, they're not leaving forever. Also, crating while you're home helps the dog learn that crate does not mean goodbye. Sometimes crate means 'not right now' or 'i'll be right back'.
Worked for me, I hope it works for you. I still crate my dong when I'm home from time to time, just to reinforce that the crate is a good thing. My dog crates on command now because she'd sell her soul for a liver treat, and those only come once she's sitting in her crate.
