What are the original star wars books?
I know star wars has the original books called star wars, the empire strikes back, and return of the jedi. am i right? and can someone give me the original author(s) as well. not the film director george lucas.
There are no "original" Star Wars books if by that you are asking what books the movies were made from. One of the many things that makes the Star Wars movies unique is that they were NOT made from existing books as is the norm with other "Saga-Stories" like Harry Potter, Twilight ... etc.
Lucas started writing this epic story in May of 1973. What he ended up with was a massive story outline, no scripts and no books, titled "The Star Wars". This massive outline was in 12 parts, not the fabled 9 episode saga or the 6 episode saga we have now. Lucas wanted to tell this story in the same way the Flash Gordon series were done back in the day but soon realized that it wouldn't work that way. In this original outline the name "Skywalker" was no where to be found. The name of the "hero" in this first outline was "StarKiller". As is the norm with stories of this size many changes were made to the base storyline ... some big ... some small ... but they had ripple effects throughout the entire story. Some of the "big" ones ... the combining of the characters of Anakin Skywalker & Darth Vader ... in the original story they were two complete different characters. Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi were the same age, best friends, & fellow Jedi Knights. Darth Vader was Obi-Wan's student who turned to the dark side of the Force and killed Anakin Skywalker. Another "big" one, in the original Luke & Leia were not siblings or twins. That change was only made when Lucas was writing the script for ep VI and got stumped on what he could have Vader say to Luke that would cause Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage. To solve this problem he made Leia into the "other Skywalker" and had Vader threaten her.
If you want a blow by blow account of all the changes that Lucas made and the massive ripple effects they had on the overall story pick up a copy of the book "The Secret History of Star Wars" by Michael Kaminski. It is a fascinating look at story of the making of Star Wars along with exposing Lucas for the "revisionist historian" that he has become in trying to explain this monster story that he created.
The MAIN thing that needs to be said to your question is this ... the story of Star Wars did NOT come from existing books. The story of Star Wars came directly from the slightly demented mind of George Lucas ... ALL OF IT. You will find many SW books out there today and every single one of them has been approved by Lucas ... EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. They are ALL part of the overall story of Star Wars.
As for the novel versions of the movies and their authors ... ep IV lists George Lucas as the author but it was "ghost written" for him by his good friend Alan Dean Foster ... ep V was written by Donald F. Glut ... ep VI was written by James Kahn. The simple truth of those books is that they are not worth reading as they are absolutely HORRID representations of the movies given the new info from the prequel movies. The sad fact is that they were horrid even before the prequels. BTW, the authors of the prequel books are ... ep I - Terry Brooks ... ep II - RA Salvatore ... ep III - Mathew Stover. The novel versions of the prequels are well worth the read. The novel version of ep III is almost "required reading" if you want to know all the little things in the story that couldn't be told in the movie due to time constraints.
In closing I must stress one last time ... the Star Wars movies were NOT made from existing books. The story of Star Wars was written by George Lucas and adapted to books by these above authors. Also, the novel versions of ep 4 - 6 have been horrid since before the ink dried on them. the novel versions of ep 1 - 3 are well worth the read and give a lot of info that didn't make it into the movies.
