What are the differences between a director, producer, executive producer?
I was wondering who's movie is it? Can the director have written the story? Also is the producer in charge because he finances the movie? Does the producer tell the director what to do??? Who hires the actors then????? Man am I confused about all these positions...
An Exec Producer is generally the person responsible for the financing of a film and in general he or the company he owns or works for owns that film when completed.
Producers generally do the day to day producing work which involves but is not limited to deal making, crew hiring, location renting and just generally putting into place all the items and tasks that will allow the cast and crew to function day in and day out.
Line Producers draw up the budget and control the spending or at least inform either the producer or Exec producer of spending. Who that line producer reports to all depends on the operating style of the EP.
The Director may be the person who has written the story or he may not be. There's no hard and fast rule here. A director may also serve as producer or executive producer and actor. See Clint Eastwood, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller or Spike Lee for a few examples of multiple hat wearing.
A good producer doesn't have to tell anyone what to do because he will have hired a crew that knows how to function as a team. A good producer hires a director whose vision he trusts. From there some decisions may fall solely on the director or might be made by committee. All depends. In my experience however, a good producer hires the right people and knows how to delegate and when to fire someone.
The casting director will have been hired by the producers or producer/directors. Once given the parameters of what kind of actors they are looking forward the process of casting will start. Rarely does a director get sole decision making on which actors are hired. Because of financial and marketing concerns of large A list films the Exec Producer/Producers will often have a final say on the stars. Once again, no hard and fast rules here but generally casting can be a bit of a committee decision.
On set a Producers job is to keep things running smoothly. If there's a problem you solve it, if something needs to happen then you make it happen. A good producer doesn't undermine his/her director and generally does not interact with the actors.
Anyway, I can go on and on but this is a decent if rambling starting point. There's no one way to do things and the smaller the production the more hats any one person wears to see the production through.
