How is Of Mice and Men a classic?
I just finished Of Mice and Men for my high school English class (required reading), and it just sucked. How could anyone say it's a classic? I don't understand how people can say it's a story about friendship and brotherly love. The relationship between George and Lennie seemed superficial, and you knew George didn't want to be with Lennie. He was more of a burden for him.
It is not a classic. It is not Steinbeck's best work. It is one of his easiest works so it is read in high school. It is called a classic because it is still read well over fifty years after it was written, but that is only because it is frequently assigned reading. On the other hand, it is better literature than most of what is assigned in high school today.
