2005 honda civic overheating confusion?
2005 civic EX.
My Civic overheats... here is some info.
My car only overheats when it is stationary and idle.
When it is stationary and begins to overheat, the heater blows cold air.
If i rev the engine and maintain a 2,000rpm or higher, the engine begins to cool.
While driving, the engine remains cool, (if its over a 2,000rpm... traffic is death)
Must refill the radiator with almost every gas fill up. (300miles or so)
No visible leaks under car while it has been at rest for long period of time
No visible white smoke or vapor coming out of tail pipe.
From what i read on forums, this problem is not that rare...
many others have the exact same issue, but no one has found an answer...
-Others have replaced thermastates with no resolve,
-Others have replaced Fans and fans switches... no resolve as well...
-Others have replaced all head gaskets to same issue 900miles later...
solution!??!?!
The critical clues are the overheating at idle while blowing cold air. That has to be a water flow problem, and in a Civic (or other Honda) that usually means the cooling system has not been burped. However, with the coolant disappearance I can't rule out head gasket leakage.
Easy things first. If it hasn't been done, open the bleed nipple (looks like a brake bleed nipple; may be on the thermostat housing) 1/2 a turn with a 12 mm socket until a steady stream of coolant comes out.
But the coolant loss makes me worry about the head gasket, which can pump a bubble into the upper part of the cooling system. To test it, remove the radiator cap when the engine is cold and start the engine. Pinch closed the hose to the reservoir and put the palm of your hand over the radiator neck where the pressure cap was. If you feel steadily rising pressure within 5 seconds that is bad news for your head gasket. If not, the coolant is going somewhere else.
