Thinking about a fantasy story with a female protagonist?
The protagonist is a homage to fantasy warrior women like Red Sonja and Richard Kirk's Raven. She would use a large variety of weapons including swords, axes, daggers, bludgeons, pole weapons, etc. She would go on countless quests, finding treasures, killing monsters, defeating overlords, etc.
Now here's what I ask you: What should the setting be like? It would definitly have things like swords, magic, non-human races, monsters, and castles, but what else should it have? What other influences from things like other fantasy genres, games, authors, mythologies, historical civilizations, etc should it have? I want it to be like D&D, but so much more.
Suggestion:
PLEASE, whatever you do, don't make the female protagonist obnoxiously spunky, tough, and brave. I've actually put down many a fantasy book because of over-the-top female protagonists. I'm not being sexist or anything, I think girls can do brave things too, but just don't go out of your way to make them seem really tough.
You should make it sort of a science fantasy type of story, with weird land formations and big cities (but still have it be roughly medieval based or Roman based)
