i want to start reading the marvel comics but i dont know where to start?
ok so im extremely ocd and am a continuity freak so i want to start from the very beginning to understand everything but i dont know where. i mean should i start with the ultimate's or should i start with spider man first edition. i have the entire civil war saga sitting on my desk but i don't even want to touch it until i know all of the history behind it please help
Be advised... the current Marvel Universe started with Fantastic Four #1 in 1961, with some stories referring back to 1939.
Since then, Marvel has included alternate universes and timelines, some one-shot appearances, as well as some full fledged product lines and imprints.

Marvel's "Exiles" and "What If" series the best known for alternate stories.
If you want to keep score, the main Marvel Universe is noted as Earth-616.

(Marvel typically numbers them by using a year/number designation. "61" refers to "1961", when FF#1 was published, although that specific timeline goes back to comics published in 1939.)
Within the 616 Universe, there are many self-contained series which do not interact with other titles, some which do not take place on Earth at all! Generally, when they do "crossover" with another title or character, Marvel writers and editors strive to give the necessary background information to the new reader.
If you wish to enjoy the characters, and not be too mired in the history, I recommend:
Marvel Adventures (Both "Spider-Man" and "Superheroes" have relaunched. There are some continuing storylines, but almost all have been collected into digest books.)
Ultimate Comics (Two lines. One was just finished. One has just started. The older line existed for about ten years, and has been almost completely collected. The new series has only been in existence for one year and is ongoing. Both take known Marvel characters and heroes, and re-invent the history.)

Essential reprints. (Big thick black-and-white reprints, a great value. The imprint is ongoing, with some series now up to the the 1970s. Marvel also reprints collector-quality volumes under the "Masterworks" and "Omnibus" lines.)
Various CD-ROM and DVD-ROM collections. (Marvel has scanned and digitized most of their comics. They have issued box sets of noted series, such as Amazing Spider-Man or Captain America. Each box has about forty-plus years of stories inside. However, each is just one series, and does not contain other series where the character may have appeared.)
Marvel Zombies (Set in an alternate universe. Your favorite superheroes become zombies, but retain their cognitive abilities.)

MC2 (Earth-982. Best known for "Spider-Girl". Set in an alternative future where Spider-Man has retired, but his teenage daughter has inherited his powers. This series is sort of a "next generation" of Marvel Comics.)

Ideally, read what you enjoy. If you get curious about something mentioned, look it up online, and then try reading that series. Don't get too hung up on the history, the epic soap opera storylines... just have fun!
