Set Comic Lot
Do comic book characters age?
I really enjoy comic book movies but haven't really read many comic books. I was curious- in the comic books, do the writers age the characters to account for the change in time setting? For example, the Fantastic Four started off in the 60s so obviously a lot of the material is dated. Or are the comics "timeless" meaning that the stories never reference a particular date or year so the reader assumes the storyline can take place in any time period? I just wasn't sure how that worked for certain superheroes like Captain America who got his powers during WWII so would be like 90 years old in the modern setting. Thanks.
The main Marvel and DC universes exist in what is called a "sliding timescale". What this means is that time does pass, but very slowly, and current Marvel and DC comics are always happening in the "now" of the real world, with older stories being brought forward in time. If you picked up a Fantastic Four comic from the 1960s, you might see a date somewhere that says "1961" or something, but current Fantastic Four comics will show the date as "2009" However, 47 years have not passed in between those two comics, because that would age popular characters too quickly. Instead, the sliding timescale dictates that that "1961" is retroactively brought forward, and in the current Marvel universe, the events of Fantastic Four #1 are now said to have taken place only 13 years ago. So yes, 13 years have passed within the Marvel universe itself.
Certain characters have aged, and Mr. Ninja provided a couple of examples of how character details have to be changed because of this sliding timescale. I'll mention some more.
-Reed Richards and Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four married and had a son named Franklin, who is about 10 years old now. He has aged slowly over the decades. He also has a little sister now named Valeria who has been around for a few years now, but is only shown as being about a year old.
-Quicksilver of the Avengers married Crystal of the Inhumans and they had a daughter named Luna who is now about 6 years old or so.
-Peter Parker was first introduced as a High School student, but he then graduated and went to college, and graduated from there and he is now 28 years old (he was 15 when first introduced)
-Members of the Power Pack, a four some of super powered siblings, were initially introduced as all being under 10 or so. Their more recent in-continuity appearances are rare, but they are now portrayed as teenagers.
-Tony Stark first was kidnapped by armed enemy forces in Vietnam. This was later changed from Vietnam to an unnamed conflict in south east Asia.
-Captain America did fight in World War II, however during a mission after the war he fell into the north Atlantic and was frozen in a block of ice until he was found and unfrozen by the Avengers in Avengers #4. Rather than having to change the character, they simply extend the time he spent frozen in the block of ice, so he will always be a WWII veteran yet be youthful.
-Nick Fury is also a veteran of World War II, however, they explain his relatively youthful appearance by saying he received an injection of something called the Infinity Formula, which extends his lifespan.
-Mr. Fantastic and The Thing were originally said to be WWII veterans. This was later updated to the Korean War, then simply dropped from their histories, so it's not really mentioned.
-The Punisher is a Vietnam vet, and this has never been changed even though that would put the character into his 50s at the youngest. He is portrayed as a bit older than most Marvel characters, however, they also explain his life has been extended because he is an agent of Death, who keeps him youthful.
-The established 13 year time span since Fantastic Four #1 has an interesting story to it. Ben Grimm, the Thing of the Fantastic Four, is Jewish, and as you may be aware, Jewish boys receive a Bar Mitzvah when they turn 13 years old. Ben Grim was never Bar Mitzvahed when he was a boy. However, there is a loophole in Jewish law which states that life begins anew at age 60, and so Jewish men who missed being Bar Mitzvahed when they were children may undergo the ceremony when they turn 73. A friend of Ben Grimm's petitioned their Rabbi that his transformation into the Thing also marked the beginning of a new life, and 13 years having passed since then, the Thing got his Bar Mitzvah. It was a really sweet story told in Thing #8 from a few years ago.
I don't know the DC universe as well, but there are some similar things there. The DC universe keeps getting reset because of the Crisis events, and their characters aren't usually tied to real world events, so there's less need for this kind of juggling.
