Does the sun affect our genetic makeup over time?
I was talking to my dad recently, and I was wondering how people got the different skin tones, like tan, and dark brown, and lighter shades of brown, and pale, and so on. My dad said that we originated from Africa, and branched into different continents, and the lack of sun caused people to acquire different skin tones. However, if this is true, which I don't know if it is, and forgive me if it isn't, wouldn't that mean that mankind would be black or variations of black, and not primarily white, and variations of white? If man originated from Africa, and has a genetic makeup that caused mankind to be black, wouldn't mankind be primarily black instead of primarily white? I was curious to know why we have different skin tones, and if our skin tones changed due to sun-exposure and lack of sun exposure, why do we still have different skin-colors? Does sun exposure effect our genetic makeup?
Absolutely. Exposure to the sun has been linked directly to causing changes in the genetic makeup of the skin. Your skin is made up of two main layers the epidermis (outer most layer) and the dermis (inner layer). Those two main layers have sub-layers. The epidermis has 5 sub-layers. The bottom layer of the epidermis is the stratum basale and that is where the melanocytes are housed. Melanocytes are skin cells which are responsible for producing melanin which makes the color for our skin, hair and eyes (iris). Sunlight, both artificial and natural, stimulates the malanocytes and cause them to produce more melanin which makes for a darker tone. People who live in regions that are constantly exposed to the sun have evolved, yes evolved, to naturally produce more melanin. People who migrated to regions where they receive less sun don't require the large amounts of melanin. We also know that the sun affects the skin's genetic makeup by looking at different type of skin cancer. One particular type is malignant melanoma. It has been shown that exposure to the suns harmful UV rays have caused malfunctions or mutations to the DNA of the skin, particularly the melanocytes which I spoke of earlier. These mutations basically change the function of the skins DNA in those cells and ultimately grow into a cancerous tumor. This is why I am an advocate of ALL people light and dark of protecting their skin from the sun. Yes we do need sunlight light so that our bodies can make vitamin D, however too much exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can trigger mutation in the skins DNA that will kill you. It doesn't take much. I'm a dark skinned African American, and my dark skinned African American aunt lost her life to this cancer. So many people think that if you're darker you're safe...not true. Protect your skin, use sun block and avoid extended periods in direct sunlight.
