i need help on a journal for the civil war/?
i have a project to do on a battle of the civil war. i received the battle of shiloh, also known as Pittsburgh landing. i need to make a journal of one of the soldiers or someone involved in the battle. it asks for information such as what side they were on, their rank, who they are writing their journal to,and when it was written. i have looked around but am not having any luck finding anything. if you know of any sites that would be great! thanks. 
Well, the first place to start is to get info on the Battle of Shiloh, which can easily be looked up on the web. There you can get the forces involved, dates concerning the battle both before and during, where both sides were just prior to the battle, etc.
Then you should decide on rank, if you're writing from someone who was serving in either the Confederate or Union military at the time. Now I say military and not Army because on the Union side you did have both Army and Naval forces involved (the USS Lexington and the USS Tyler were riverine gunboats in the Navy which took part in the battle). In the Union Army you're looking at the following ranks for Officers in 1862: Major General, Brigadier General, Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant. In the Union Navy in 1862 the officers were: Rear Admiral, Commodore, Captain, Commander, Lieutenant Commander, Lieutenant, Master (today we'd call them Lieutenant Junior Grade), Ensign. In the Confederacy, the officers ranks were: Full General, Lietenant General, Major General, Brigadier General, Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant. Union NCO (Non-commissioned officers, or most of the enlisted ranks) were Cadet and Hospital Cadet, Sergeant Major, Quartermaster Sergeant and Regimental and Commisary Sergeants, Ordenance Sergeant and Hospital Steward, First Sergeant, Sergeant, Coporal. For the Confederate Army the NCOs were Sergeant Major, Quartermaster Sergeant, Ordnance Sergeant, First Sergeant, Sergeant, Corpral. In both Union and Confederate armies the lowest of the low was the Private. Keep in mind these are all in descending order by pay grade (in the case of NCOs where there is more than one name for the pay grade then each name is for a different resposibility in that pay grade). For the officers You'll probably not want to consider anything above Major in the Army, it's equivalent rank in the Navy is Lt Commander but you may not want to go over Lieutenant. NCOs the cadet ranks in the Union would not be likely to see combat. As for the Navy, while I'm not sure about the NCOs, you did have the following ratings (or jobs): Able Seaman, Apothecary, Assistant Paymaster's Steward, Boatswain's Mate, Boatswain's Yeoman, Boy, Captain of Tops, Cockswain (a slight name change to Coxswain came about in 1865, three years after Shiloh), Gunner's Mate, Master-at-Arms, Master's Mate, Nurse (Male, not female), Officer's Cook, Officer's Steward, Painter, Paymaster's Steward, Quarter Gunner, Quartermaster, Sailmaker's Mate, Ship's Cook, Ship's Corporal, Ship's Steward, Surgeon's Steward. Petty Officers did exsist as Naval NCOs, though I am unsure what all the Petty Officer ranks were.
As for civilians you wouldn't worry about ranks. But there would probably be fewer civilians present. Among those that might have witnessed the battle would have been reporters and sutlers. Sutlers were traveling salesmen who sold to the troops, and were not always that well liked by the troops. In addition to these you might have also camp followers (which were not always prostitutes and could be photographers, relatives of some of the soldiers, gamblers, and preachers), doctors, nurses, members of the US Sanitary Commission, and of course anyone who might have lived in the area.
As for the journal part, to me journals are typically diaries and not written to anyone in specific. But if you have to write to someone, maybe you'd be more writing letters. In which case it would be important to determine the type of letter you're writing. There would be two basic types in this case, the letter home and military corespondence. In the first I'm going to draw on Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and Corporal Daniel Chisholm for examples. Looking at a letter from Shaw, the following is how he addressed it:
"Guard-Tent Second Massachusetts
Camp Hick, Near Frederick, Md. 31/2 o'clock, A.M.
Dec. 25, 1861"
In both we can see he gives his location and the date. Of interest on the first is he also gives the time of day he sat down to write it. The December 25th letter was opened with "Dearest Mother," and closed with "Your loving son, Robert G. Shaw. The January 15th letter was opened with "My dear Effie," and closed with "Always your loving brother, Robert G. Shaw." Shaw didn't always sign his name in his letters, as is evidenced in his letter of April 11, 1862 to his mother in which he just put down "Always your loving Son." And in one to his wife he put down "Your's affectionately, R.G.S." Another leter to his wife he signs "Good night; with much love, your Bob."
In comparison, let's look at a couple from Chisholm:
"July 10th, 1864 --- City Point Hospital, Va.
"Dec. 1st, 1864 --- Pittsburgh Hospital"
The July 10th letter opens with "Friend Joseph M. Hadden," and closes with "From Your Friend, Daniel Chisholm." The December 1st leter opens "Dear Father," and closes "your Affct Son, Daniel Chisholm." I
