What would you buy a one year old girl?
I'm going to see my cousin and her one year old daughter. I wanted to take a gift for her little girl as a thank you for letting us stay with them, also taking the family out to dinner. What should I get her that won't take up too much space. She's not walking yet, so no push carts.
Also I am strongly opposed to "interactive, educational video games".
How thoughtful of you to take a gift for the little girl.
Basically you have three categories of things you might choose:
Something that's for the baby now Something that's for the baby later Something that's really for the parents (the mother) Not much falls into the first group. The baby doesn't care about clothes. She might like a small stuffed animal or something she can grab and chew on. She's big enough to hold onto things, and it'll be teething time soon, if not already. As an infant, I loved a little panda bear whose tail squeaked when you spanked it. The bear was naughty a lot, as I recall.
In the second group are such things as cloth or heavy cardboard picture books, stacking rings, shape-sorting toys, nice carved wooden rings, rattle, or cars, plastic building blocks, and--great favorite with toddlers--a "popcorn popper" or "lawn mover" that she can push or pull as she trots around and that makes interesting noises. It won't be long before she is on the hoof. Also consider a "Sit 'n' Spin" or a plastic rideable toy like "Bucky" the horse.
In the third category is clothes, bibs, convenience items, or a little dish and cup for when she is ready to feed herself. You might consider a pretty seasonal outfit for the upcoming holidays--maybe a dress or something glamorous in red velvet. A good guess for size is 24 months.
